What Are Dental Crowns & How Do They Work?

Dental crowns are used to cover, strengthen, and improve the appearance of a broken or damaged tooth. Often referred to as “dental caps”, crowns add on to the healthy remains of a damaged tooth to create a strong new tooth that blends naturally with your smile. We also use materials that make the tooth feel as natural as possible.

The process of getting a dental crown begins with an in-person consultation with your Short Pump cosmetic dentist. Your dentist will assess the level of decay or damage to the tooth to decide if a crown is the best option and then will determine next steps based on the health of the remaining tooth. Once it has been determined that you will need a crown, the process continues with preparing the tooth for the crown. To do this, your dentist will shave the dead and decayed parts of your tooth away and will build on the healthy portion that remains intact. Your dentist will then take an impression of your teeth, build the crown, and place it. In most cases, this process can be done all in one day, making for a fast and convenient solution to your cosmetic dental needs.

What Are Dental Bridges & How Do They Work?

Dental bridges are used to bridge gaps between one or more teeth, most often filling gaps created by missing teeth. Bridges look and feel natural in your smile because they are made using 3 or more dental crowns. Similar to dental crowns, our goal with dental bridges is to create a naturally blended smile that makes you feel confident in your teeth.

Multiple crowns are used when creating bridges because the crowns at each end of the bridge are attached to the surrounding healthy teeth, also known as “abutment teeth”. Abutment teeth offer support for the crowns used to bridge the gap created by missing teeth.

How Do I Keep My Dental Crowns & Bridges Clean?

To care for your dental crowns and bridges, practice good oral hygiene just as you would with your natural teeth. Crowns and bridges accumulate bacteria and plaque build-up too, so proper oral care will prevent further tooth decay or gum disease, keeping your smile healthy and bright.
